1950 Evening Gown

Designer: Howard Greer - Date: ca. 1950-1959 - Material: Marquisette - Accession: 2001.191.1.554

Inspired by Christian Dior’s “New Look,” Hollywood designer, Howard Greer fashioned this dress late in his career. It features ample skirt fabric offset by a small waist and revealing soft shoulders. The yards of marquisette in the skirt speak to the abundance of the period. Black was Greer’s signature color, and he created dramatic necklines designed to look their best when the wearer is sitting at a table.

Donated to the University of Illinois Bevier Historic Costume Collection by Miss Lisa Fosse. Property transfer to the Illinois State Museum, 2001.
