1928 Dress

Date: ca. 1928 - Material: Unbleached Cotton - Accession: 2001.191.0001.0283

The 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Moderns was the first stylistic introduction to what was later to be termed Art Deco. This dress’s simple geometric lines moves its style in that direction. Black was formerly a mourning color until Coco Chanel of Paris introduced it as a terrific evening wear color.

Donated to the University of Illinois Bevier Historic Costume Collection Mrs. J.K. Moffett. Property transfer to the Illinois State Museum, 2001.
