1945 Dress

Date: ca. 1945 - Material: Satin - Accession: 2001.191.1.476

Strong shoulders and simple lines popular during the World War II years dominate this full-length satin evening dress. A sleeveless underdress is covered by a matching long jacket. The jacket’s subtle detail includes tiny quilted rows of trapunto-style cording, which lines its hem and collar. Made on a home sewing machine, the jacket’s short puff sleeves employ netting and sleeve pads to support the lift of the puff sleeves.

Donated to the University of Illinois Bevier Historic Costume Collection. Property transfer to the Illinois State Museum, 2001.
