1932 Dress

Date: ca. 1932 - Material: Tulle - Accession: 2001.191.0001.0369

Hemlines seemed to fall with the Stock Market Crash. The first full-length talking movie, The Jazz Singer, was first screened in 1927. By the 1930s, fashion followed Hollywood glamor as people sought to mentally escape the Great Depression. Key feature of Hollywood glam appearing in 1930s was the focus on a sexy back. Even this fairly modest dress has a back embellishment.

Donated to the University of Illinois Bevier Historic Costume Collection by Mrs. Everett King. Property transfer to the Illinois State Museum, 2001.
